Aids has taken a devastating toll on life for many Zimbabweans and the plight of Aids orphans has been publicized world-wide. The average life expectancy of a Zimbabwean is now 37 and as a result the number of orphans continues to rise. As the economy went into freefall extended families have found it harder and harder to support these children.
Had it not been for the incredible system of cultural obligation that the extended family has in African tradition, these children would have had nowhere to go. They are taken in by an already over-burdened family and end up at the bottom of the pecking order, when it comes to clothes, food and schooling. On our farm, we have a growing number of these children that the Yakanaka Foundation has been able to help with food, clothing, school fees, and medical care.
We have one fantastic donor who donates monthly to provide the essentials of first aid – basic medicines, bandages, pain killers. Keeping this box stocked makes a big difference as the nearest national health facility is a ten kilometre walk.
