The once extremely good medical infrastructure in Zimbabwe collapsed with the downturn in the economy with often no medicines, doctors, or basic equipment such as beds. The Farm Clinic, which has been operating for years for the benefit of all the farm employees and their families, became over-burdened with the need to supply basic medical care to the thousands of people who had no other source of care.
The Yakanaka Foundation has been able to assist both The Farm Clinic and a government clinic to supply primary health care to thousands of people for whom it was simply not available. We are proud that during Zimbabwe’s devastating cholera epidemic last year, the district the Foundation operates in conjunction with a number of NGO’s had only three cases, with no fatalities. We support and buy all the medicines for as many as we can, an example of which is Ivy, a 3 year old girl who has severe asthma. We are currently working with Celebration Life - Health, to see if we can get a team of surgeons to this area to operate on Club Foot Patients. We have found at least 15 children in the area with this awful but easily correctable problem. Hopefully in the coming months we will have a positive outcome. The Yakanaka Foundation is not a formal NGO, it is a voluntary effort of a few concerned people in Zimbabwe, and a group of wonderful people all over the world who have assisted with so much, and have made an enormous difference in the lives of some of the people of Zimbabwe.
