We have been amazed by the humanity of the people Yakanaka has come into contact with and the amazing interest and support for Zimbabwe in these very difficult times. We have had customers (both individual and companies) who have asked if there was any way to donate privately to help specific needs in Zimbabwe. 100% of donations go to the projects All those who work in the Foundation do so voluntarily. Sadly what we needed first and foremost was food, so that is what the Foundation initially focused on. Our second desperate need was medical supplies, as the government run hospitals and clinics could not even supply aspirin in the past. Things have improved considerably but they fluctuate.
Now that things have improved slightly, we are no longer feeding adults, but have continued our feeding program for 60 children, some 20 of whom are AIDS orphans living with their extended familys.
We are still supplying primary health facilities with needed inputs. Working with the Local AIDS programs, we have arranged for HIV screening and CD4 counts, with the supply of retrovirals for those in need. This program has covered some 500 children and adults, including Yakanaka’s employees and some of our producer groups.
