Old Amber can be found all over the world, however it is becoming extremely rare. There is many different colours of Amber, ranging from Black Amber from India, Baltic Transparent (Sea) Amber, Ruby Amber and the various shades of Yellow, Orange and Red. Amber beads have many subtle graduations in colour, where there is clearly a complete variation in colour - it is due to other substances such as wood ash and other particles. It is light in weight and when rubbed it picks up pieces of paper, the word electricity derives it name from the Greek word elektron, which means Amber in Greek. Amber is believed to have many magical powers, and Greek myths describe it as solidified tears or the essence of sunrays. They are among the oldest substances used for adornment.
African Amber – Copal These beads are not as old as the true Amber beads, they are semi fossilised and are mainly found in Africa, namely Zanzibar Island, Morocco, Kenya, and Mali, however they still carry the mysteries and magical powers of true Amber. The Africans believe Amber to have healing powers due to its warm colours and suns rays, bright and healthy. |
